classical Berlin architecture meets modern times

More than a century ago a refugium for female students of the city of Charlottenburg was created near the Ernst-Reuter-Platz. On the street side provided witha representative façade, marked by Prussian clarity, the court was created as a small park with ponds and colonnades.  At this special place the young ladies should be given the opportunity to study undisturbed in comfortable single rooms with central heating, balconies and lift. The facilities of the house also included soundproof music rooms, gymnasium, library and an auditorium. Houses of this kind were a highly innovative rarity at the beginning of the 20th century: not only was less than a tenth of all students female at that time. The construction and operation of the dormitory as a non-profit organization was ahead of its time. During the past 100 years the house has been used in many ways: for almost the whole time it was for example the master stage of one of the oldest independent theatergroups of Berlin. Since the Charlottenburg district had to sell the house in 1972, it served mainly as an office building a bank. After the ensemble was left empty in 2011, it is now carefully restored. Here in the courtyard of the ensemble is carried out both an extension to the existing object and an architecturally attractive new building.

Construction of a new apartment house

The paid attention to all details that the house was once built with, is also the leitmotif of the careful restoration work. Here the charm of high ceilings and elegant wooden windows is maintained conscientiously. Erected in the courtyard the modern building with its strictly structured façade of steel, glass and brick plant constitutes an exciting architectural contrast. Unlike the memorial-listed old building most modern claims can be implemented here. The apartments impress with bright rooms and floor to ceiling windows, which reflect the elegance of the house. The furnishing of the rooms and bathrooms is at a high level: course underfloor heating is installed under high quality oak parquet in all rooms. The colors and materials of the windows and doors of course meet the guidelines of monument conservation. Overall, the apartments are characterized by open, spacious layouts with kitchens, high ceilings and galleries. The upper floors are equipped with balconies, the ground floors get small terraces.
